Postproduction

The first product submitted after filming for first time was not really conveying that it was a horror opening. Our teacher aided us in finding better ways to film and convey the message we were trying to get through. For example she told us how at the end we can show the main character waking up to show that this is a dream sequence. As of cuts we mostly used straight cuts. We have to add transitions that goes with the pace of our opening.

Editing: 

• We are using Wevideo to edit our shots. While editing we will add a black and white filter to  some of our scenes to create that dream effect and fear to our video. Some sounds were created by us for example the knocking on the door. We also added some creepy sounds and music to make the video feel more eerie.

Technology:   

• While filming we had an issue with branding. We were wearing school uniforms in our shots and we thought about the risk of being copyrighted so we decided to refilm everything. Photoshopping was not really an option since it was going to take a long time to edit each and every single shot we had. while following the conventions of Horror we edited the opening using Wevideo.

•  Technology which were accessible to us were our phone we had an iPhone 12 and a 11. Whenever we would have issues with the 12 we would switch to the 11 making sure both camera settings are in 4k.

Branding

We were given the assignment to create a brand name for our final project. We had to come up with the name on our own. And I came up with the name JEN-Z. I came up with the name by taking our group members first initial and putting them together. J is from Ja’Niyah, E is from Evicka, N is from Nia, last but not least Z is from Zhanae. We ended up using JEN-Z productions as our name. We each have to create an animation using the brand name and out of the four we’ll choose whichever one we like more.

After finishing our preproduction the following week we went straight to filming. We were given an extra week to film so in total we had two weeks to film. During February 22-25 we had to film but one of our group members was not ready which caused us to start filming the last week of filming. On Monday we filmed the easiest and fastest shots to get them out of the way. And on Tuesday we didn't film because we had to remake our branding. On Wednesday and Thursday Zhanae, Nia, and I had to film all the shots not including Ja'Niyah considering she was absent on both days. For Friday we plan on doing all the main shots and finishing them according to our and Mrs. Landis schedule. As a recording device we used an iPhone 12 and a 11 we were planning on only using the twelve but we had some technical issues and had to use both, the quality on them turned out really good since we had the setting on 4k. I have learned that we can use any recording device to film if you just know the right angles and camera movements. The killer in our film was not our original killer and we had to use a low angle shot to make him look more powerful and more like a killer. We did not use any tutorials because the equipment we used we had already gotten used to using them.

My group and I this week were focused on planning and scheduling to film our blogs. We discussed  thee days and time frame we would use to film each scene.

We created this strip board by importing our script to the scheduling section on studio binder. Studio binder basically created the stripboard but we had to change some of the settings to our liking. The scenes are listed and color coded which kind of matches our production calendar.

The production calendar was also created with the help of studio binder. We had to put the specific date and time for us to film the different parts of our opening. Our shooting days are planned for four days  which might end up taking about a full week of our shooting time period.

My group and I (Zhanae, Nia, Ja’Niyah) are making a horror story following all of the conventions of the horror genre for our portfolio project. Our groups were picked by interviewing each for classmates to see who we wanted to be in our groups based on the answers of our classmates. We had to create the story submit it and we also had to research for the film opening. We were asked to sign a contract. order to start shooting we will have to find the followings including locations, casting actors, storyboarding and making sure everyone is comfortable with all of the schedules and all the preparations that have been created.

Mise-en-scene

The mise en scene for our project was outside of her school because most horror thriller movies or shows are involved with schools The props that will be used are desk, tables, books, pencils, papers. We will not have any special outfits we will be using our CTA uniforms considering it was an actor school activity so we are still in our normal daily uniforms.

Storyboard

For our story board we divided a word document into four sections cinematography, sound, editing, and mise-en-scene. Since there’s four people in the group and there’s fourth portions we all took one portion and completed are parts of the chart.

Sound

You cannot have horror movies without specific sounds. Most of the shots will come assist of a dialogue between the actors we will use a shot reverse shot that will be filmed on a camera and I believe the voiceover will be also filmed on a camera or on our phone voice memos and we also are adding eerie music in human voice to make it very unsettling.

Cinematography

Without cinematography there would be no film. Cinematography we are mostly doing medium shots, close-ups, extreme close-up shots, establishing shot, shots, high angle shots, extreme longshots. we have been given a specific date to film we have to try our hardest to get it done in between the time frame so we don’t fall behind.

It is directed by James Wan. The conjuring movie is based of off true story form the experiences of Ed and Lorraine Warren. The genre of the movie are horror/thriller/supernatural horror/ mystery. It is meant for young adults, to adults.

Production

The production companies for the conjuring movies include New line cinema, The Safran company, Evergreen media group.

Distribution

The first conjuring movie was created on July 19, 2013. The movie was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is streaming on many platforms including Hbo max, Netflix. It can also be purchased on Vudu, Google play, Amazon instant videos, and iTunes.

Marketing

The conjuring movie has made a total of 319.5 million usd. And the franchise has grossed $2 billion in global ticket sales. On opening weekend it made a total of $41,855,326.

Cross-media convergence and synergy

The soundtrack got income through the CDs because of their attachment to the movie.

Goes from production to distribution to exhibition. Production refers to the making of the film; finding the idea, writing the script, pitching it to a studio, setting a budget, casting stars and employing a crew, filming, editing.

Investors: For a film to go into production it needs investors to provide the necessary funding. Box office is success is never certain and so investors try to reduce the risk of losing their money by becoming involved in important decisions. 

• Key questions that they will as are: 
• Is the film's storyline similar to other films that have made money recently?
• Does it offer easy selling points?
• Are there obvious marketing spin offs to give added publicity?
• Is the star popular?
• Had the director had previous successes?

Risks include: what level of audience will it attract?, level of funding necessary?, is it marketable, will the funding make a profitable return?.

Green lit: Before a director starts filming the film has to be green lit, meaning funding has been made available by the investors. There is normally a time limit on an option, usually two or three years, if the film is not made throughout the time the rights can be sold. Non-digital films are made up images printed on acetate negatives, then spliced together, lastly fed through a projector at 24 frames a sec - Analogue. 

                                         Distribution

The distribution phase of the film industry is a highly competitive business of launching and sustaining films in the "market place". You must remember that the film industry is a business and the films are products to be marketed and sold. Every film has its own distribution plan to ensure it reaches the right audience. In UK distribution can cost from up from thousands to 4 or 5 mill. The school holidays all play roll in the success of  a film. Film release dates can be announced years before filming. The film can be removed on Monday by the cinema if the opening weekend does not make a lot of money. Films are released in releasing windows. Theatrical window is usually around for four months.

Film distributor has to decide how it will represent a film to a potential audience, they need to find its 'unique selling point' "USP". They also look at the stars of the film, are there new spectacular special effects in the film, and who is the director.

Different ways to market a film include, posters, trailers, online, and mobile, content, premiers, interviews, merchandising, festivals, awards.

                                                               Exhibition

The cinema release of a film marks the final stage of one part of a film's journey from idea to audience. After the cinema release, the film will the be available on several different formats. Each of these "exhibitions" of the film offer the opportunity to generate profit. 

The film value chain includes cinema, DVD/Blu-ray/Downloads, subscription television, free to air television.

The different films I chose were chucky's bride, and scary movie 2. The location of chucky's bride took place in the evidence room at the police station and scary movie 2 opening scene took place in a haunted house. Most horror movies take usually take place in a haunted house or in a cabin in the woods with a lake. Different groups are sometimes stereotyped with people of color dying first, or the weak girl is running away and trips on air or nothing and falls and gets murdered. In almost all of horror movies someone dies and they reveal some of the main characters. Horror movies are mostly enjoyed by teens and young adults because they enjoy the thrill of it. The very first horror movie was called “ The house of the devil” which came out in 1896.

Chucky's bride's opening scene was about a cop who took evidence from the evidence room in a prison and was taking it to a woman whom he was talking to on the phone. He was very curious and nosy and wanted to see wat was in the bag and he let his curiosity get them best of him and opened the bag but the lady popped up out of no where and slit his throat. It then shows a house where she was sowing something it turned out to be chucky. It has dark to lowkey lighting, police uniform, all black leather outfit, doll sized overalls, flickering lights, lightning. 

Scary movie is a horror comedy but it started with a group of people singing around a piano then a little girl shows up and pees on the floor. Turns out she was possessed and they called a exorcist to perform an exorcism on her and it did not quite turn out the way they wanted it too. It includes very lowkey natural lighting, older clothes which tells me it possibly could've been a flashback.

Types of Movies/Movie Genres

 There are many different type of movies narrative, documentary, & documentaries. And there are also different genres in film comedy, horror, romance, action, Horror comedy, etc. A genre is a style or category of art, music, literature or film. When thinking about a genre you should think about the different parts of the film, this helps the audience identify the type of fil they are watching.

                               Background knowledge 

From my own research and my classmates film genre project, I have learned that drama contains stories with high stakes and a lot of conflict. These drama films started in the 1940's but they began rising in 19700. When the audience analyses these films they must look at the role characters: relationship, atmosphere, and the tension created. 

                                                     Content Application

The content that was applied for my project was horror comedy. To construct this project I first had to understand my genre the horror comedy, a sub-genre that sets blood, gore, and screams right next to gags, prat falls, and laughs. To analyze this genre the audience might take a look at the lighting, the costumes, camera techniques, giant sharp fonts the color of the fonts which would most likely be red representing blood. The intended audience for this genre is more young adults to teens that enjoys the thrill scare and laughter of a horror comedy film.

Cinematography

 Cinematography is “the art of photography and visual story telling in a motion picture or television show. It has different camera angles and different camera movements. It supports the overall mood of the film. You also have to set up the camera and many different angle for every single shot. There are many different techniques and terms.

“ The history of cinematography began in the late 1880s, when people began combining multiple consecutive photos to create the illusion of a motion picture”.

•some techniques used in in cinematography are high angle shot, low angle, undershot, P.O.V. shot, full shot, medium shot etc

Content that I applied was identifying shot types and angles. I used my phone for  this assignment to take multiple shots of pictures also at different angles. My peers were in different settings for each shot and I used the camera app to take the pictures. which after I inserted them into a word document and labeled each shot.

Mise-en-scene

  What exactly is Mise-en-scene? Mise-en-scene is a French word meaning “the action of putting onto the stage”. In films it may refer to the overall look of a movie. It contains two major components design which is the overall look of the whole setting the characters etc, and composition the way everything balances and is organized. When analyzing mise-en-scene you have to wire down everything you see, considering the categories and the purpose of the scenes.

 In the 1950s when reviewing movies, the magazine “cahiers du cinema” and film critics were calling it mise-en-scene.

 •Mise-en-scene affects how we think of the characters and story.

• In film mise-en-scene refers to the overall look and feel of a movie.

Learning about  mise- en-scene  has changed my whole perspective on how I will see movies from now on. Whenever I’m watching a movie with my family now I will explain to them what mise-en-scene is so they could try and understand more.

The editing software I chose was clip champ.

- accessible from anywhere (web-based)

- ability to lay multiple tracks (both audio and video)

- ability to strip or mute audio and natural sounds from video

CLIP CHAMP

Clip champ is a website accessible on computers and smartphones. I have noticed that on the computer you can create and account and sign in and you can login anytime but when you try to go on the website using your phone you have to download the app. But other than that you are able to lay multiple videos, I’m not really sure about audio because I haven’t tried it yet. We can also take off any sound from original videos while editing. There are transitions we could use to make the scene change smoother like fade in/out. Conveniently there’s is a barcode that you can scan using your phone camera that allows you to import footage from your personal device to the website.

OPEN SHOT

You can not use open shot unless you download it which is kind of irritating. Apparently you can trim and slice shots to your liking. There are also different animations you could add. Unlimited tracks which mean you can add as many background videos, audio tracks, etc as you want. It is available in over 70 different languages and you add time effects like slow motion, and sped up.

iMovie

iMovie is also an app but it can only be downloaded on apple products since it’s an app created by apple. With iMovie you can also cut shots and you can fade audio which is very interesting. It has 13 different video filters. You can record your own voiceover or add built in sound effects. They also have over 80 smart soundtracks which you could add to match the length of your movie.

Why I chose Clip champ?

Clip champ meets more of the requirements given to me and it seems a lot easier to use and a lot more fun.

Film opening blog 2

 Three different genres I would consider doing for my portfolio is comedy, action, and Horror. The auditory elements of Horror is more eerie jump scare like type of noise, while for action it’s more exciting fast music or sound, and for comedy it’s more comedic sounds like laughter in the background.

The visual elements of horror movies or more dark gray is blue is clear very dim lighting or pitch black, as for action it’s more of a red and black or orange color excuse seeming and for comedy its either bright or normal lighting. The characters for horror either always have a scary mask on or they have scary makeup, they carry weapons and some have very sharp nails. Action characters always have scares and bruises all over them and gun/weapon holders in their belts can have all black clothes to indicate them being a spy. Comedy they sometimes have funny costume and wigs or mustaches on  they overall are just weird. But i feel as if horror is more interesting to people especially my age.

White chicks

White chicks is an comedy film released in 2004 about two FBI agents who are also brothers who are always failing task assigned to them by their superior. In order for them to redeem themselves they ordered the agents to be undercover chauffeur drives for two rich prissy twin sisters in order for them not to be kidnapped while visiting for a fashion event. After being picked up by the agents the dog of the twins caused them to have a minor accident. They both got very small scratches on there faces and threaten not to ever go out in public because of the minor imperfection. So one of the brothers convinced the twins to hide out in a hotel. While they were in the hotel the two agents decide to dress up as the twins in order not to get fired of disciplined by their superior. As the days  go past they make so much new friends until the day of the fashion show where the actual twins finally come out and say that the agents are intruders as they rip of the disguise of them reveling the people under the mask wig and makeup. In the end they all stayed friends .

The opening scene shows the two FBI agents doing one mission about drugs. They say do all the wrong things causing them to get into a gun fight and getting in trouble with their superior.

Auditory element there is a lots of Memes in and Spanish words going around because of the world they have to play while being undercover cops in the opening scenes

Visual elements there are a lot of cross cutting

In about the characters we can tell who are going to be to make it is because they’re the people starting off the movie and as the scenes go on you see them getting a lot more attention then some of the other characters. I’m good 

Rush Hour 3:

This this movie was released in 2004 it is a comedy action film about an inspector and officer Who wants to unravel mysteries about the Chinese triads so they chase in assassin all the way to Paris. Officer Carter had to call inspector Lee for help on the mission.

The opening scene is 2min long on Yt

The opening scene shows Officer Carter working traffic and he’s listening to music and not paying attention to the roads really causing like four people to get into accidents and he ask the black guy if he’s OK and put the two gos in handcuffs the two girls and he ends up on the phone with inspector Lee and inspector Lee is in a car while on the phone.

Auditory elements there’s a lot of cars in the background and The main sound is the sound of the music playing in the headphones, also a lot of honking.

That’s for visual elements there is a lot of different camera angles it starts to really capture the moment and there’s also just seeing where it goes back-and-forth back-and-forth because the two characters are talking on the phone

Also we can tell who the main characters will be because they are there for people who shows up in the movie

Friday :

Friday is a movie made in 1995 it’s genre is a comedy drama The main character has just been laid off of work and his friend smokies boss Once all of his money at once or all his product back but smoke he does not have the money and the main characters girlfriend accuses him of cheating on him and his dad scolded him because he kept eating all the food in the fridge the neighborhood bully kept bullying them

But at the end of the movie they taught him a lesson by the main character pushing him in the face and knocking him out and everyone was happy because they thought the bully would calm down on bullying other people.

The opening scene starts off in the hood you can tell because he has shoes tied on power-lines. There are also kids riding bikes around. When you showed all the main characters and all the side characters in the people who would be talking the most during the movie.

These movies are very different when it comes to sound, setting and some camera angles because they’re not all the same genre and I’ll have the same topic so they are most likely to have very different outcomes.

For auditory elements you hear music in the opening scene and it’s very calm and peaceful in the background noise because it is morning in most people are sleeping still.
